We are On The Level.
Two filmmakers in Brighton, making video for charities, universities, businesses and musicians. We met at Sussex, found out we worked well together, and made a company out of it. You tell us what the film needs to do. We plan it, shoot it, cut it and deliver it.

THE NAME
Half Brighton landmark, half job description. On the level means straight-talking and no fuss, which is how we like to work.

HOW IT STARTED
First year at Sussex, mid-lockdown, we swapped favours: Lewis helped on Adam’s mockumentary, Adam helped on Lewis’s COP26 film, which went on to win an award. By third year we were making The Price of Salmon together and taking freelance jobs on the side.

WHY WE DID IT
Nobody was going to hand us a media job on graduation, so we made our own work instead, with a partner already tested on real shoots.
WHO YOU’LL WORK WITH
The two of us.
One of us keeps the job moving. The other keeps it looking and sounding right. Neither has to check the other’s work.
Lewis Alford
PRODUCER · EDITOR · CLIENTS
Lewis is a Media Production graduate who started out on camera and moved into producing and directing. He’s usually the first person you’ll talk to. He runs the brief, the schedule and the people, and he’s led the interviews on our documentary work. He’s also the editor, so the person who heard your brief is the one shaping the final cut.
Adam Cannell
CAMERA · SOUND · WRITING
Adam has a Master’s in filmmaking and is the technical half of the operation. He does most of the camera work and the sound, and he’s usually the one heads-down fixing whatever the kit or the room throws at us. He writes and produces too, and he’s run sets as 1st AD on short films, keeping ambitious shoots on schedule.
